Takeaway
A light and fruity Pinot Noir with just enough earthy depth, but at thirty dollars it doesn’t deliver the value we hoped for.
First Thought
Colin brought this bottle to the table, choosing it because New Zealand Pinot Noir has been missing from the lineup lately. At just under thirty dollars, it felt like a step above the usual weeknight price point. Expectations were mixed: would Central Otago live up to its reputation, or would this feel like an overpriced experiment?
Tasting NOtes
On the nose, bright red fruit came through first: cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. Underneath, a subtle earthy note showed up, leaning mushroom and forest floor with a hint of oak tucked into the background. The palate stayed light, almost watery at first, with crisp acidity keeping the fruit lively. As it opened up, the edges softened slightly, but the wine never gained much weight or depth. Tannins were barely there, giving only a faint grip, and the finish lingered with red fruit.
Quick Tasting Notes
- Cherry, strawberry, raspberry
- Light earthiness, mushroomy undertone
- Touch of oak and smoke
- Bright acidity, light body
- Very soft tannins
Highlights
Screw cap Style The screw cap is classic New Zealand, where sustainability and practicality often come first. It keeps things fresh without sacrificing quality.
Price Check
At thirty dollars, the hosts agreed it does not match the value of other wines at the same price point. At eighteen to twenty, it would feel like a great casual Pinot.
When to Pour It
This wine does not need extended breathing time. Open it ten minutes before serving and you will get the full picture
Final Verdict
Overall, the hosts agreed this Pinot Noir is easy to drink and shows off some nice fruit and freshness, but the thirty dollar price tag holds it back. While no one disliked the wine itself, all three felt it simply does not deliver the value expected at this level.
- Joel – A Casual Sipper Joel enjoyed the fruit but found it one dimensional. Light, easy drinking, but nothing worth writing home about.
- Aaron – A Casual Sipper (but overpriced) Aaron thought it was perfectly fine for a screw cap everyday pour, but at thirty dollars he would not buy it again.
- Colin – A Casual Sipper (borderline Backup Wine) Colin agreed it was drinkable and fresh but could not get past the price tag. At this cost, the value felt closer to a backup wine than a must have Pinot.
Group Consensus: All three agreed it is pleasant to drink but not worth the thirty dollar price. For that reason, Rabbit Ranch Pinot Noir lands in the Waste of Your Wine category.
And as always Stop Wasting Your Wine!
